NATIONAL SKILLS CONFERENCE 2017

 

The National Skills Authority in conjunction with the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Blade Nzimande is convening National Skills Conference to be attended by all stakeholders in the post-school education and training system. The conference is scheduled to take place on the 23 and 24 March 2017 at St Georges Hotel in Irene, Pretoria. 1000 delegates will be invited to take part in this Conference to ensure high level discussion and maximum stakeholder participation.

The objectives of the conference are as follows:

  • Strengthening the skills development system to enhance productive and decent work for current and future socio-economic growth and development
  • Unpacking the strategy principles of the proposed New National Skills Development Strategy (NSDS) in the context of current economic challenges as well as opportunities presented through the National Development Plan (NDP) and other National Growth & Development Strategies
  • Deepening the understanding of opportunities for synchronisation and collaboration between post school education and training institutions and skills development bodies
  • Creating a platform for a strengthened social partnership model for planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of skills development
  • Positioning skills development to address rising youth unemployment 

The skills conference is a national event that brings together key players within industry, SETAs, Labour, Education and Training Providers, Community Organisations, Government Departments responsible for Human Resource Development and other strategic agencies and organisation such as South African Qualification Authority, the Council for Higher Education, Quality Council for Trades and Occupations, etc.

CALL FOR NOMINTATIONS: NATIONAL SKILLS DEVELOPMENT AWARDS 2016 #NSA2016Awards

The National Skills Authority (NSA) is inviting all the relevant organisations and institutions implementing (NSDS) skills development to participate in the National Skills Development Awards. The prestigious awards ceremony will be held in February / March 2017.

The objectives of the awards are:

  • To celebrate excellence by recognising best skills development practices across all skills development implementers and NSF Funded Projects in various categories.
  • To provide extensive and national coverage/exposure for best skills development practices through print and electronic media.
  • To recognise work placement opportunities created through the various learning programmes i,e artisan development, FET graduate placement, Universities graduate placement, learnerships and internships.
  • To encourage maximum use of workplace-based skills development initiatives.
  • To mobilise business, government, community and providers to ensure the realisation of the NSDS III goals.

Invitation to attend public hearings on the NSDS and SETA landscape

Parallel to the call for public comment process of the Department of Higher Education and Training, the NSA will be convening Provincial public hearings that will inform the NSA advice to the Minister with respect to the NSDS and Seta landscape proposal beyond 2018. The PSDFs are still encouraged to submit their written inputs to the DHET before the expiry of the extended submission date of the 29 February 2016.

The National Skills Authority (NSA) invites skills development stakeholders from Quality Councils SETAs, Government, Business, Labour, Education and Training Providers, Community Constituencies, Research Institutions, Professional Bodies and the general public to attend public hearings on the NSDS and SETA landscape beyond 2018.

The NSA is a statutory advisory body established in 1999 in terms of Chapter 2 of the Skills Development Act (SDA) No 97 of 1998. The primary functions of the NSA are to advise the Minister of Higher Education and Training on matters of skills development in accordance with section 5 of the Skills Development Act.

The NSA in partnership with Provincial Skills Development Forums (PSDFs) will be hosting public hearings in all Provinces to ensure the mobilisation of business, government, community and labour to take full ownership of the National Skills Development Strategy (NSDS) and SETA landscape.

The objectives of the provincial public hearings are:

  • To solicit recommendations on the NSDS and SETA Landscape beyond 2018.
  • Update the Provinces on post-school education and training related policy matters.
  • To monitor progress on the implementation of the NSDS III
  • To understand the challenges facing each Province with respect to the post- school education and training needs

The National Skills Authority will be in your Province.
